BRAZIL-
On the afternoon of January 26, a group of religious individuals present an Impeachment request against Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. The piece, written by the Brazilian Association of Jurists for Democracy (ABJD), was supported by the National Council of Christian Churches of Brazil (CONIC), National Commission Justice and Peace, Brazilian Anglican Church’s Episcopal Chamber (IEAB), Brazilian Baptist Alliance (ABB), in addition to the catholic and evangelical leadership.
The document is signed by 380 people tied to christian churches, including catholic, anglicans, lutherans, presbytherian, baptist, and methodist, in addition to 17 christian movements.
The request at issue focuses on reporting crimes of responsibility referring to the areas of health, the criminal handling of sanitary politics during the pandemic, the lack of access to vaccines, and the contempt for the life of the Brazilian population, usurping them their right to health care and so infringing a varied array of articles in the Federal Constitution.
“The main motivation for this request is related to the total lack of initiatives from the government to diminish and contain the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic”, affirms the pastor Romi Bencke, representative of CONIC.
“Manaus’s suffocation is the suffocation of the entire country, which right now has an abandoned population because we have a government that denies the right for life”, she said.
