“We want equality, respect and dignity: we want to show that we resist”

BRAZIL-

Brazil had its National Day of Trans Visibility and ‘Koinonia, ecumenical presence and service’ recalled that this country continues to be the one that kills the most trans people in the world. It is important to note that trans experiences are diverse and are violently attacked in their lives, their daily lives, subjectivities and performance in society.

In the current political and health situation of this pandemic and the administration of Jair Bolsonaro, the transgender population in Brazil suffers even more from the loss of recently acquired rights and the neglect of their demands in public policies, explains the Koinonía portal.

On January 29, 2004, for the first time in the history of the country, trans and transvestite people went to the National Congress to expose their reality marked by the stigmas and violence of patriarchy, racism, transphobia and an economic system that eliminates trans people as political subjects of society.

Thiphany Raphaela, explains for Koinonía: “Trans Visibility Day represents the struggle, the resistance, because trans women and men, we suffer various types of violence and sanctions, psychological, physical, economic, etc. For me the most important thing is to inform and raise awareness in society as a whole about this important date for trans people who experience all kinds of crossings, barriers and harassment”.

I want to make an-appeal: no more transphobia, no more killing our bodies, respecting our bodies, respecting who we are, only human beings! We want equality, we want employability, we want to show that we resist!”, claimed the activist, a member of Koinonía.
