Join faith leaders in mobilising churches to end sexual and gender-based violence

An online event hosted by the Anglican Alliance will bring together members of the We Will Speak Out coalition and global faith leaders to discuss how to mobilise churches in ending sexual and gender-based violence.  You are invited to join them in the webinar and take part in the discussion.

As part of the We Will Speak Out Coalition the Anglican Alliance is inviting participants across the world to join a one-hour webinar on mobilising faith communities to end sexual and gender-based violence.

The webinar will take place on Wednesday 11th February 2015 and will run from 12-1pm GMT. Presenters – all of whom have first-hand experience in addressing sexual and gender-based violence from regions across the Anglican Communion – will discuss key ways in which faith communities can mobilise; speaking out and taking practical action to endsexual and gender-based violence.  Register for the webinar at http://view6.workcast.net/register?pak=4190568644793728

You can email christina.manning@aco.org to find out what time the webinar will be where you live.  If you cannot make the live webinar, a recording will be posted online after the event.

Presenters will be discussing the role of faith leaders to break the silence on sexual and gender-based violence; tackling impunity and bringing justice; care and support of survivors; church as a safe space; and engaging men and boys on positive masculinities. The Anglican Alliance’s Latin America and Caribbean Facilitator, Paulo Ueti, will give a theological reflection on gender justice.

Global faith communities will be enabled to speak out and act to eliminate sexual violence, not just in conflict but in fragile states and situations of peace as well.

The event follows the successful ‘Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict’ (ESVC), which convened in London in June 2014.  Anglican participants at the Summit included the Archbishop Henri Isingoma, Archbishop Bernard Ntahoturi, and Archbishop Rwaje Onesphore.  News of their participation and presentations can be found here: http://anglicanalliance.org/pages/11041

In the Chair’s summary of the ESVC Global Summit, the previous UK Foreign Secretary, William Hague, and Angelina Jolie, Special Envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, wrote:

“The Summit recognised the need to engage faith-based organisations as active partners in the fight against sexual violence, both in helping to formulate strategy and in providing front-line support to survivors.”

The coming discussions will build on this learning and draw faith communities and their leaders together to speak out from local to global level, and to move beyond words in encouraging practical and collaborative action.
