Declaration of The Presbyterian-Reformed Church in Cuba Regarding the Announcement of Reestablishing Relations Between the Governments of Cuba and the United States of America

HAVANA

December 17, 2014

Today, we witnessed the televised intercessions of the presidents of Cuba and of the United States in which both recognized the necessity of putting to an end the hostility of more than half a century and of reestablishing diplomatic relations between our two countries that will lead to normalizing our relationship. We also heard the welcome news that Mr. Alan Gross and some others imprisoned in Cuba, as well as the three Cuban prisoners being held in North American territory, have been freed, permitting their reunification with their families.

The Presbyterian-Reformed Church in Cuba gives thanks to God and joyously celebrates these agreements. Through the decades, we have been bridges for meeting and for exchanging visits between Cuban and U.S. churches; we have dedicated ourselves to contributing to the Gospel ideal of struggling for peace and justice; and we have raised our voice against the harsh economic and trade measures that North America policy has imposed upon our people.

By the same token, we have received the strong support of our sister church, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), through their official resolutions and conversations with leaders of Congress and representatives of the government.

We recognize the efforts of the Vatican, in the person of Pope Francis I, as well as the government of Canada in the pursuit of these understandings. We trust that an era of peace for our nations is near, and, on the eve of celebrating Christmas, we are reminded of the divine purpose of peace and goodwill on earth.

“Glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:14 (NIV)
