The Interreligious Council of Peru begins activities for COP 20 with a walking vigil and concert

On Sunday, November 30, the Interreligious Council of Peru held a walking vigil and concert to mark the beginning of the Conference of the Parties – COP 20, with the theme: “The Life of the Planet is in Your Hands”. COP 20 is being held in Lima from December 1-12.

The walking vigil and concert brought together people of the different religious groups that are at the Lima COP, to demand that the representatives of 195 countries go beyond the interests of their own countries and think of global solutions to climate change.

The vigil-walk and concert took place in the Floresta Park, with the participation of religious leaders and representatives of different faiths throughout the world who are in the Peruvian capital for COP 20. Laura Vargas, Executive Secretary of the Interreligious Council of Peru announced that the participants included representatives from the Orthodox Church, Fast for the Climate, Lutheran World Federation, Faith and Science, and the International Buddhist Community. Participants also included leaders from the National Evangelical Council of Peru (CONEP) and from the National Union of Christian Evangelical Churches, Peru (UNICEP).

Laura Vargas also confirmed the participation by a South African musical group, Desert Rose, as well as national artists. The Executive Secretary of the Interreligious Council of Peru was expecting between two and three million citizens to participate in the event.

The Council has encouraged fasting in the different faith communities throughout the past nine months, to bring together the different religious communities and faith based organisations for COP 20.
